Values to memorise
- Freedom of speech — people can peacefully express opinions, but must obey the law.
- Freedom of religion — people can choose any religion or no religion.
- Freedom of association — people can choose which groups to join or not join.
- Equality of men and women — men and women have equal rights.
- Rule of law — everyone must obey the law, including government, police and leaders.
- Democracy — Australians change government through voting, not violence.
- Mutual respect — people should respect the rights and freedoms of others.
Common values traps
Can people use violence for political change?
No. Political, religious or social goals must not be pursued through violence or extremism.
Can Australians criticise the government?
Yes, people may criticise the government peacefully and lawfully.
Can people choose no religion?
Yes. Freedom of religion includes the right to follow any religion or no religion.
Are men and women equal under Australian values?
Yes. Equality of men and women is a core Australian value.
